Food Illustration
This is a collection of foods I have illustrated over the years. I was inspired to make these illustrations for various reasons. I believe that part of drawing is understanding. I’m able to internalize what I learn about ingredients, recipes, and flavors from drawing them.
Pear and Fennel Salad
This exploded diagram representation of a recipe, like this one of a pear and fennel salad, is something I started doing with recipes I had learned. It was a good way to internalize the recipe so I could make it again from memory. This illustrations style landed my a job with Vox Media, illustrating recipes that highlighted California Avocados.
Italian Foods
My family is from Northern Italy. These are typical foods from the Piedmont region I documented on our last visit in 2022.
Individual Foods
This is a collection of individual food drawings. I drew these because I found them visually interesting like the swirl in the Tamago or how a cauliflower or squash looks when you cut it open. It can be fun to chase a little spark of inspiration like that.
Turkey Club Sandwich
I drew a very detailed version of a Turkey club sandwich with lots of texture and vibrant color. The whole thing looks like it’s about to fall onto your plate to be devoured. It’s not often that an illustration of food makes you hungry in the way that a photo does, but this one gets me. This illustration was picked up by a greeting card company is currently being printed on the front of a greeting card.
Patterns
Food is beautiful. I like to make patterns out of the shapes and colors in foods. These are personal pieces, but it would fun to make a textile out of something like this, don’t you think?
